BRISBANE Lions recruit Rohan Bewick made a flying start to his AFL career despite the disappointment of his club losing by two points to Fremantle on Saturday night.

Bewick, who was recruited from West Perth, took no time to make his presence felt as he set up his captain Jonathan Brown for the game’s opening goal inside the first minute.

The classy left-footed forward was on the end of a Simon Black clearance from the opening bounce, and then delivered to Brown who nailed his set shot from 50 metres out.

Midway through second quarter, Bewick had his first AFL goal when he was on the end of a handball, swung on to his left and snapped a neat goal from 25 metres to put the Lions three goals ahead.

The 21-year-old was pleased with his first up showing after the match, but conceded his debut was dampened by the tough home loss.

"I felt really good, just devastating about the loss," he said.

"It was a good experience, but one that got away. The intensity and hardness at the ball, players’ commitment at every contest, and all-round intensity stood out."

The nephew of former Essendon small forward Darren Bewick said he was pleased with his first touch but would have liked to have provided his captain with more opportunities.

"It was a good start, but a couple more of them to the big fella would have been alright, and he went down unfortunately," Bewick said.

Bewick, who weighs in at just 76kg, said his body held up well to the rigours of his first AFL match.

"The body felt well, I had a bit of an interrupted pre-season, but it’s all good. I just cramped up like hell, but the body’s fine apart from that," he said.
