Running machine Harry Sharp has set a new Brisbane Lions Club record, clocking a sub nine-minute 3km time trial time at the weekend.

The Club’s second pick in the 2020 NAB AFL national Draft, No 43 overall, left his new team mates in his wake at Nudgee College.

A national 2000m Under 18s steeplechase champion, Sharp broke the 2km time trial at the NAB AFL Draft Combine record in Melbourne by 20 seconds with a time of 5 minutes and 28 seconds.

The 183cm midfielder was equally destructive with his first timed run at the Lions, beating reigning champ Jarrod Berry home by almost a minute with Hugh McCluggage third.

Last week when the original time trial was postponed due to the 3 day Covid 19 lockdown for Greater Brisbane, Berry said he knew greater his grip on the title was temporary.

“It’s his, I am no chance of catching him,’’ he said.

“We’ve had a couple of running sessions already and he has put me to the sword.

“Harry is an unbelievable runner, there is no chance I’m going to stop him taking the title.’’

The Lions’ gain is athletics loss with Sharp deciding to focus solely on his footy in his final year of school, which must be a frustration to the athletic coaches at his new school, St Laurence’s.

Lions High Performance Manager Damien Austin said going under nine minutes over 3kms put Sharp in a league of his own among footballers he had worked with and he was excited by his addition to the Club.

‘Harry is obviously an exceptional runner and the hope is he helps drive other players along in that aspect, not just from a 3km time trial aspect, but from a conditioning perspective,’’ he said.

“It is exciting to see what transferability to match running he can demonstrate.’
