The Brisbane Lions VFL side suffered an 86-point defeat at the hands of Queensland rivals, the Gold Coast SUNS at Brighton Homes Arena on Saturday afternoon.

After conceding the opening two goals of the contest the Lions bounced back quickly booting five majors of their own.

Two goals to small forward, Ben Thomas along with Logan Morris, Jamieson Shea and Ewan Macpherson had the Lions leading by three goals at the 26-minute mark of the opening term.

A late momentum surge for the SUNS saw them pile on four majors in as many minutes to lead at quarter time by eight points.

Jarryd Lyons was at his prolific best with 35 touches, eight clearances, fifteen tackles and a goal to lead from the front.

The SUNS kicked five goals to two in the second term to push the margin out to 27 points at half-time.

Majors to Jake Lohmann and Kalin Lane kept the Lions within arms reach as momentum began to swing the SUNS way.

Jaxon Prior was solid all day, collecting 32 possessions and eleven marks to lead the backline, who endured an onslaught in the second half.

The third term the SUNS run rampant, kicking nine goals to the Lions two, majors to Lyons and Shea along with a behind, were the only scores for Brisbane.

Jimmy Tunstill was strong throughout the contest with 25 touches, 10 tackles and five clearances to help the Lions win clearance overall 46 to 44.

Two goals to Thomas in the last quarter, who finished with four for the match, gave the Lions a shining light to run out the game, as they moved to three wins and three losses for the season.

Zane Zakostelsky built into the game nicely in his first outing for the Club finishing with 10 disposals and six marks off half-back.

The Lions now get the week off with a bye in round 7 and will travel to Melbourne to take on the Casey Demons in round 8, Saturday May 18.
