A number of promising young Brisbane Lions players have been dealt cruel injury blows over the past week.

The unfortunate series of events started at the team’s main training session last Wednesday, when Claye Beams ruptured his ACL and underwent a full knee reconstruction.

The bad news continued over the weekend, with a further three players being added to the Club’s injury list.

Jared Polec (ankle), Patrick Wearden (face) and Ryan Lester (adductor) all suffered injuries from the Lions’ senior and reserves matches at Metricon Stadium.

Polec landed awkwardly from a marking contest during the final quarter of last Saturday night’s QClash, and was visibly in pain as he was helped from the field.

While initial fears from the sidelines were that Polec had damaged his knee, it soon became apparent that it was instead his ankle.

“We thought initially it might have been his knee, but fortunately it was his ankle,” Brett Burton told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

“We’re still trying to determine the extent of the injury.”

Patrick Wearden, meanwhile, was brutally felled by a Gold Coast opponent during Sunday’s NEAFL clash at Metricon Stadium.

“Unfortunately Patty got a nasty one – a fist to the face basically in a marking contest,” Burton said.

“He’s unfortunately broken his jaw in three places.”

“He got operated on down on the Gold Coast (on Sunday night). Our Welfare Manager (Manny Lynch) was down there looking after him, but he’ll come back to Brisbane today to start the recovery process.”

Although Wearden’s exact time on the sidelines is yet to be determined, he is expected to miss a significant period.

Lester, meanwhile, suffered an less serious adductor injury, but will be closely monitored by the Club throughout the week.

In better news, Burton revealed that Brent Staker was a genuine chance to play with the Reserves this Saturday at Coorparoo.

“Stakes has had a few fits and starts, but he’s back ready to go,” Burton said.

“He’s in full training this week and we’ll look at playing him in the Reserves this weekend.”
