The NEAFL Brisbane Lions have gone down to the Redland Bombers by 67 points this afternoon, after a goalless second half.

The Bombers were up-and-about early kicking the opening four goals of the game with Lion, Matt Hammelmann slotting the side’s first goal after a big contested mark.

In hot and sticky conditions, the Lions were working hard to get the ball forward, but were missing easy shots on goal, which made an impact on the scoreboard.

An early goal to Hammelmann in the second quarter sparked the Lions, with the young side’s ability to take some risks starting to pay off.

Jonathon Freeman kicked a crucial goal and was then forced to come off the field with a split under his eye.

Redland forward, James Charlesworth was proving difficult for Lions defenders after kicking three goals and taking an absolute hanger before half time.

Hammelmann took a brilliant mark and went back kicking his third for the day, which left the Lions trailing by only 14 points going into the main break.

Michael Close set up the goal from a brilliant tackle in the forward pocket, which ignited some tempers in a fiery incident after the half-time siren sounded.

During the break, coach Shane Woewodin told his players to keep working hard, and pressing forward, but insisted that they must make the most of their opportunities inside 50.

The Bombers came out strong, early in the second half, winning the ball in the middle and kicking five unanswered goals after poor turnovers from the Lions.

The heat and conditions remained difficult for the Lions in the second half, with the team making easy disposal and positional errors.

Redlands ran away in the end, kicking another three goals in the final quarter, keeping the Lions to just three behinds for the second half.

First year midfielder Ben Keays backed up his admirable performance from last week (39 touches), finishing with 31 disposals and six tackles.

Nick Roberston was strong and bold, breaking tackles and setting up a lot of play going forward in his 28 disposals.

Matthew Hammelmann finished with three goals from the first half, but missed a couple of shots, within range in windy conditions.

Young defender, Eric Hipwood held up the backline alongside Jackson Paine with the duo making countless spoils and taking important marks.

The Brisbane Reserves will be looking to take moments from todays first half into next weeks clash against the Gold Coast Suns Reserves at Yeronga.
