NEAFL Match Preview: v Redland

Bryce Heaton  May 12, 2017 11:56 AM

The Redland Bombers have a tough task on their hand at home on Saturday, taking on a Brisbane Lions outfit.

The Lions suffered their first loss of the 2017 season last weekend against the Swans after they were undefeated from four matches.

Meanwhile, the last placed Bombers are on the up after almost stealing the Quandamooka-Turrbul Trophy from Aspley at Graham Road, with just two late goals to the Hornets denying Redland their first points for 2017.

Redland will need contributions from their big guns, six of which have been selected in the 2017 NEAFL Representative Squad, namely skipper Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds, ruckman Craig Malone, former Lion Sam Michael, youngster Jack Rolls and high flyer Clay Cameron.

Injuries to Lions Mitch Robinson and Dan McStay in the seniors may have a knock on effect which sees Brisbane take in fewer listed players.

Brisbane Lions: 3rd

Redland: 10th

Round 12, 2016: Brisbane Lions 7.12 (54) d Redland 7.11 (53) at The Gabba

The last time these sides met ended in drama, Michael Close chasing down Hayden Bertoli-Simmonds to earn a free kick and slot the winning behind.

Matt Hammelmann was outstanding in defence for the Lions with 26 disposals and 16 marks.

Blake Grewar. Former Redland Best and Fairest was drafted under the Queensland zone selection during the 2016 NAB AFL Rookie Draft. The midfielder will play his first NEAFL game against his old club. Last time the two clubs met, Grewar was among the best with 37 disposals - for Redland.

Former Lions Academy member Jack Rolls made a triumphant return from a meniscus tear last week with 25 disposals and seven tackles. Nominated twice before for the NEAFL Rising Star award, 18-year-old Rolls will be looking to impress.
