The Brisbane Lions have landed the signature of one of the AFL Women’s most sought after players, with Kaitlyn Ashmore recommitting to the Club for the 2018 Season.

Hailing from Ballarat, Ashmore played for Melbourne University in the VFL Women's League before being recruited as a priority pick by the Brisbane Lions in October’s AFL Women’s draft.

An elite runner with outstanding foot skills, Ashmore was dangerous across half-forward for the Lions.

The 25-year-old was nominated for Goal of the Year for her spectacular goal off the ground against the Giants.

Ashmore, an integral member of the Lions’ side that went undefeated into the inaugural AFLW Grand Final, has since returned south to play for Melbourne University in the VFL Women’s competition through winter.

“Kaitlyn is a talented player and a huge asset to our Club,” said Brisbane Lions Women’s CEO Breeanna Brock.

“We’re really pleased she has re-signed with the Lions. We see Kaitlyn playing a big role on and off the field for us.”

Ashmore said she was excited to be part of the Lions for a second season.

“I’m absolutely rapt to be part of the Lions again in 2018. I loved everything about the Club as soon as I put a foot in the door – the players, coaches, support staff and the supporters were amazing,” said Ashmore.

She said she was confident if the players bring the same mentality and culture that they brought to the squad in the 2017 season, they can go one better next year.

“The girls show so much professionalism and a want to be better each time they hit the track so it's easy for me to stay motivated when I'm surrounded by that mentality within the group.”
