Prized recruit Hugh McCluggage says that he’s no certainty to make his debut in Lions colours during the JLT Community Series, telling Lions TV that Senior Coach Chris Fagan will make all players ‘earn their spot.’

“He’s (Chris Fagan) has just said everyone’s got an equal chance of getting a run, so you’ve just got to put your best foot forward, keep knuckling down at training and earn your spot I guess,” McCluggage said.

“Everyone is on a level playing field now.”

McCluggage’s silky skills and class have been on show during INC pre-season training period, and the 18-year-old has been happy with how he’s progressing.

“Yeah, it’s (pre-season) going well at the moment. Injury free, so I’ve been able to do most of the stuff,” he said.

Today the team was put through the paces, doing some match simulation, and McCluggage said there’s a noticeable difference at AFL level.

“It’s definitely just a bit quicker I suppose. It’s always going to be a step up when you go from one level to another,” said McCluggage.

“You’ve just got to make a decision quickly.

“I’m really enjoying it so far.”
