DAYNE BEAMS says the Lions’ younger brigade showed plenty of promise in Sunday’s win against Carlton at Etihad Stadium.

The 9-point victory was Beams’ first in Lions colours, joining experienced players Allen Christensen and Mitch Robinson as well as three game player, Harris Andrews, in the circle.

“We’ve got guys that are very young and losing the first five games, for me, I’m an experienced player and it still stings you a bit and dents your confidence a bit.

“There were some guys tonight that stood up. ‘Squizzy’ Taylor I thought was really good, Harris Andrews took some really good grabs and Dan McStay up forward and kicking four goals. It’s great for their confidence and hopefully they can back it up”, he said.

Lions end drought

The Blues controlled clearances from the midfield early but the Lions hit back and were able to gain some ascendency in passages of play during the second half (48-44).

“We’re getting done a bit (in the midfield) at the moment. We’ve got a bit to work on as a group and we’re really confident in the guys that we’ve got in there.”

“It’s a different sort of system from what I’ve come from. There are different players around me and I’m getting used to those sorts of guys. It’s more about learning as individuals. They’re a great bunch of blokes and hopefully we can build into something formidable and turn into a really good midfield”, Beams said.
