Terry Wallace discussed his analysis of Brisbane’s list on NAB’s Trade Radio on Friday and believes the Lions midfield are primed to impact the opposition in 2016.

“Through the middle and around the flanks they’re actually at the perfect age to impact”, Wallace said.

“Rich (25), Harwood (24), Hanley (27), Rockliff (26), Bewick (26), Zorko (27), Christensen (24), Green (23), Martin (29), Robinson (26), Beams (26) – the Brisbane group are in the right age bracket.

“But they’ve got all babies in their key positions – Clarke at 22, Close at 21, Freeman (21), Paparone (21), Gardiner (20) and McStay only 20. It’s sort of lopsided, they’ve got the outside and the run and carry at the right age and one wonders whether the two dynamics are going to come together.”

The Lions recruited Carlton’s Tom Bell and Geelong’s Josh Walker and Jarrad Jansen on Monday.

At 196cm and 99kg, Walker will provide a mature-bodied presence up forward for a Lions team that lacked targets at times in 2015. Bell and Jansen are both big bodied midfielders, with Bell also playing across half forward.

Wallace is confident Bell will follow former Blue, Mitch Robinson, in a successful move up North.

“A fit Rockliff, Hanley and Beams can only make the team better going into next year.

“I do worry a little bit about their physicality through the middle of the ground. But they’ll bring Tommy Bell in, I’m expecting him to deliver a bit more grunt to that area of the ground so that may be able to assist them there.

“I think the net losses and gains aren’t going to be as bad as what people think this time around.

“Some of those boys that they’ve got there, McStay and those guys – they can play, but they’re 20,” Wallace said.

“They’ve got to build something around them until they are ready to impact.”
