Daniel Merrett says he'll stay aggressive despite his recent ban
HE'S learnt a harsh lesson, but Brisbane Lions full-back Daniel Merrett says he'll stay aggressive when returning from suspension against Geelong on Sunday.
Merrett was rubbed out for three matches following a sling tackle on Essendon's Michael Hurley in round eight.
He said while feeling a touch of guilt for leaving the Lions a key member short for three matches, his tackle set the standard for the win over the Bombers.
Merrett said he felt disappointed more than guilty.
The Lions have lost against Carlton, Collingwood and Fremantle in his absence, and with a bye throw in, the 28-year-old has missed four weeks of action all up.
"There's no room for sling tackles in the game and I've learned that the hard way," Merrett said.
"I'll have to adapt the way I tackle and I've learned my lesson.
"That's (aggressive) how I've got to play. I'm a big bloke in the team and that's what I'm here to do. That's when I play my best footy, when I'm aggressive.
"I've always been told by the coaches, play like a big bloke."
Merrett said it had been tough watching the three losses from the grandstand.
He has kept in shape by doing "a mini pre-season" and working out with co-captain Jonathan Brown who was suspended for two weeks.
With Merrett, Brown and Brent Moloney (back) all returning, the Lions have arguably their strongest team for the season on the field.
In a big day for the Lions, they are also celebrating Simon Black's club games record achieved against Fremantle last week.
The players wore a commemorative black guernsey at training on Saturday that is available for purchase.
On game day the club is encouraging spectators to wear black. Those fans will be seated in the same sections together.
"What a player he's been for the club and the AFL, and I'm glad to celebrate the great man's career," Merrett said.
