Trent West's big performance against St Kilda on ANZAC Day looks to have come at a cost, with the former premiership ruckman charged by the AFL Match Review Panel with a first offence of making negligent contact with umpire Scott Jeffrey.

The incident occurred during the second quarter of the Lions' Round Six match against the Saints in Wellington.

A first offence for making negligent contact with an umpire is an automatic $1,200 sanction. An early plea reduces the penalty by 25 per cent to a $900 sanction.

The Lions and West will have until midday on Tuesday to decide whether to contest, or accept, the charge.

Fortunately it won't have any bearing on West's availability for Saturday night's clash with Sydney at the Gabba.
