The Brisbane Lions are no stranger to training, or even playing, in hot and humid Queensland conditions, but this Saturday’s match against Melbourne in Darwin will be something different altogether.

With temperatures expected to stay above 30 degrees in the ‘Red Centre’ all week, the Lions will need to be even more diligent as they approach the game.

Recent matches played at TIO Stadium have been scrappy affairs, with the lethal combination of searing heat and evening dew not generally conducive to ‘clean’ football.

Lions Strength and Conditioning Coach Matt Hass said the Club already has plans in place to help prepare the players for the unique environment.

“I guess the main concern is just the heat,” Hass told LIONS TV as part of the Bupa Recovery Report.

“We’ll make sure the boys are really well hydrated, look after their core temperature with plenty of ice slushies, and the air conditioners will be on in the changeroom.

“Then there are those small things that the boys need to be aware of, like the extra sweat. You’ll see some guys with sweat bands on this week, and they’ll be chasing the ‘Grippo’ I’m sure so they can get their hands on the pill.

Saturday night will mark the first time the Lions have played an official AFL game for premiership points in the Northern Territory, while Melbourne have been hosting games at TIO Stadium for the past few years.
