2016 was the start of the Lions' rebuild and the launch pad for their success today.

Following the departure of Justin Leppitsch, Brisbane made a bold call to employ a Head Coach who had never played at the top level, opting with former Hawthorn General Manager of Football, Chris Fagan.

And while the call was questioned by commentators at the time, those queries have quickly been answered, with Fagan playing a critical role in the clubs turnaround in the last five years.

Having featured in the last three finals campaigns, Brisbane used the 2016 draft as a chance to rebuild, and they've done so successfully.

With Pick 3, the Lions selected Hugh McCluggage, who has been a home run selection.

The classy midfielder has made the past three All-Australian 40-man squads and has finished within the Top 3 of the Merrett-Murray Medal count for the last three years.

At Pick 17, Brisbane also selected Hugh's great mate, Jarrod Berry.

And while Berry was hampered by injury in 2021, he is a clear long-term piece of Brisbane's midfield as well.

With Picks 23 and 24, Alex Witherden and Cedric Cox were selected with the former now playing at West Coast, while Cox was delisted in 2020.

However, the Lions struck gold in the Rookie Draft, unearthing ruckman Oscar McInerney who now plays an integral part in the teams success.

2021 saw The Big O claim the role of number one ruckman following the departure of Stefan Martin at the end of last year.

McInerney thrived with the added responsibility, finishing third in the competition for hit-outs while averaging 13 disposals and 5.5 clearances.

He was also awarded the Marcus Ashcroft Award for Most Professional Player in 2021.
