The Club received this end-of-first-round pick as compensation for the loss of Michael Rischitelli, who signed with the Gold Coast Suns as an uncontracted player at the end of 2010.
The exact selection won’t be known until the 2012 draft order is finalised in November, however it will be placed at the end of round one immediately after the round one selection of the 2012 Premiers.
The Lions weren’t alone in utilising their pick, with four other clubs also advising the AFL of their intention to activate compensation selections before Wednesday’s 2pm deadline.
It's no surprise considering the 2012 AFL Draft is being touted as having some quality young talent.
The Western Bulldogs (two), Melbourne (two), GWS Giants and Richmond will also use compensation selections at the 2012 NAB AFL Draft.
The full details are as follows:
Western Bulldogs - round one selection (compensation for the loss of Callan Ward). To be taken in round one immediately after the 2012 selection of the club.
GWS Giants - round one selection (received from the Adelaide Crows in a trade, after compensation for the loss of Phil Davis). To be taken in round one immediately after the 2012 round one selection of the Adelaide Crows.
Melbourne - round one selection (compensation for the loss of Tom Scully). To be taken in round one immediately after the 2012 round one selection of the club.
Melbourne - mid round one selection (compensation for the loss of Tom Scully). To be taken in round one immediately after the round one selection of the ninth-placed club and before the round one selection of the eighth-placed club.
Richmond - round two selection (received from Port Adelaide via the Gold Coast Suns in a trade, after compensation for the loss of Nathan Krakouer). To be taken in round two immediately after the 2012 round two selection of Port Adelaide.
Western Bulldogs - round three selection (compensation for the loss of Sam Reid). To be taken in round three immediately after the 2012 round three selection of the club
Brisbane Lions - end round one selection (compensation for the loss of Michael Rischitelli). To be taken at the end of round one immediately after the round one selection of the first-placed club.
All clubs still all have the right to on-trade these compensation selections to another club in the 2012 exchange period, but all these selections MUST be used at the 2012 NAB AFL Draft.
The Lions have already used its other compensation selection (also end-of-first-round) at last year’s Draft to secure West Australian wingman Elliot Yeo.
That particular compensation selection was initially received by the Western Bulldogs to accommodate the loss of Jarrod Harbrow to the Suns. The Bulldogs then on-traded the compensation selection to the Lions at the end of 2010 in exchange for Justin Sherman.
