With just over a week from the start of the 2023 NAB AFLW Season, we spoke to Brisbane Lions Women’s Head Coach Craig Starcevich.

Starcevich touched on some of the learnings from the Lions preseason practice matches and what he is looking forward to ahead of the 2023 NAB AFLW Season.

In particular, Starcevich lauded the move to the Lions brand new $80 million Springfield base, Brighton Homes Arena.

“We’ve made the most of our new home, and the fantastic training conditions we get in a Queensland winter, to have our squad in a strong position coming into round 1,” he said.

“We’ve used the time to work on some areas technically and tactically that will allow us to maximize the strengths of our group.

“We are very determined to keep playing a style that’s enjoyable to play and exciting to watch.”

Despite an indifferent offseason with the departures of Emily Bates, Greta Bodey and Jesse Wardlaw.

Starcevich believes this season provides the Lions with a chance to show the young talent at his disposal.

“After having a fairly settled 21 over the past few seasons, we’re now in a position to introduce new talent.

“Some have been waiting a couple of seasons to earn a spot, while others have been recently recruited, or are returning from injury.

“That’s always the exciting part coming into a new season.”

The Lions have secured the services of seven new players through various different mediums including rookie signings, free agency, trade and the draft.

Starcevich is excited to see who will stand up and take their opportunity this year.

“I’m looking forward to our eighth season starting next weekend and who’s going to get their first chance to play and who’s grown and improved between seasons.”

The Lions welcome Richmond to Brighton Homes Arena next Sunday September 3 for Round 1 action of the 2023 NAB AFLW Season.
