The Brisbane Lions Football Club congratulates Luke Hodge on his induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night.

Hodge joined the Club from Hawthorn via the 2017 AFL Trade Period and made a huge impression in his two seasons at the Gabba.

The Lions recruited Hodge due to the leadership and football IQ he was revered for during his illustrious 305-game career with the Hawks.

It was a journey that saw him go from being a Colac teenager taken with Pick 1 in the 2001 National Draft to one of the game’s most decorated players.

Hodge built an incredible resume of four premierships (three as captain), three All-Australian blazers, two club best and fairest and two Norm Smith Medals.

Therefore, it was hoped he could help mentor Brisbane’s young talented list on and off the field in a bid to experience success under coach Chris Fagan.

And the Lions, particularly Fagan – Hawthorn’s former General Manager of Football during Hodge’s time in the brown and gold – knew he was invaluable.

Hodge played a total of 41 games for the Lions in which he helped the Club play its first finals series in a decade.

The Club was also on the record saying that the four-time premiership star helped change the perception of the Lions in the footy world and become a destination Club.

Hodge retired from AFL football at the end of the 2019 season, yet the Lions continue to benefit from his vital tutelage today as the reigning premiers.

Fagan was full of praise for Hodge following his induction into the Australian Football Hall of Fame on Tuesday night.

“Luke helped enormously in changing the culture at the Lions,” Fagan said.

“He is one of the best leaders ever to have played AFL.

“He led from the front with his tough, relentless brand of football and always supported his teammates with honest feedback and encouragement.

“Had an amazing ability to produce on the big stage - especially in Grand Finals.

“On top of that he is just a great person and family man.”

The Club also extends its congratulations to Hodge’s wife Lauren, their children and extended families for the sacrifices and contribution they have all made during his career.
