Dooley to debut out west

Brisbane Lions AFLW Irish recruit Neasa Dooley is set to play her first game of AFLW footy against Fremantle this Saturday.

The 25-year-old, hailing from Kildare will be selected in Craig Starcevich’s side to headed to Perth this weekend after putting together a strong pre-season since arriving in Australia.

“It is incredibly exciting to be picked to play my first game this weekend and I can’t thank everyone who’s helped this pre-season enough,” Dooley said.

“Since I arrived in Brisbane, the players, coaching staff and the Club have been amazing and made my transition from Ireland very easy.

“It has been an adjustment coming to Australia but having the ability to run out with the other girls this Saturday is an opportunity I’m grateful for and I can’t wait.”

Playing predominately as a forward in Gaelic Football, Dooley’s asset is her size and speed playing a key role in her ability to hit the scoreboard.

Dooley enters AFLW with strong pedigree, winning the All-Ireland Intermediate championship, Leinster Championship and Division 3 League all in 2023.

Spotted by Starcevich on a trip to Ireland he noted her ability to pick up the game so quickly this pre-season.

“We are really excited to have Neasa play this weekend and it is a reward for a lot of hard work and perseverance since arriving in Australia,” Starcevich said.

“Her willingness to break lines, take the game on, and strong kicking skills are areas which excite us as a coaching group. Whilst her development through the pre-season has been solid, we’re mindful this only the first step on her AFL journey.

“She’ll bring all her weapons on Saturday and we know she’ll give it her best shot.”
