Experienced Brisbane Lions defender Darcy Gardiner has signed a new one-year contract to stay with the Club for 2026.

Gardiner, taken with Pick 22 in the 2013 national draft from the Geelong Falcons, will play on for a 13th season at the top level.

The 29-year-old has spent most of his 179 games since arriving at the Gabba as a key pillar in defence, while recently playing as a swingman.

Gardiner said he couldn’t be happier remaining in the maroon, blue and gold for at least another season.

“It’s a privilege to play on for a 13th season and I am very fortunate to be at a successful Club where it feels like one big family that have a lot of fun,” Gardiner said.

“To be regularly playing finals is certainly something I don’t take for granted, especially after not playing finals for the first half of my career.

“My focus now is to keep putting a lot of time into staying fit and healthy so I can be out there and ready to go whenever the team needs.

“And as a team it’s all about playing consistent football and achieving the ultimate.

“Our hunger certainly hasn’t wavered after last year so I can’t wait to see what the rest of this season and next year has instore for us.”

Gardiner’s re-signing is another boost for the Club and comes just a week after premiership veteran Dayne Zorko also put pen to paper.

Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly said having Gardiner playing on in 2026 was great news for the Club and defender.

“It’s really pleasing to see Darcy sign a new contract and he definitely deserves it for what he has contributed and overcome,’ Daly said

“To return after an ACL injury last year and play 14 games this season says a lot about his professionalism and dedication.

“Darcy has been an important player for us for many seasons and is also very respected by his teammates and staff.

“We look forward to having Darcy, his wife Sophie and their families continue to be part of the Brisbane Lions.”
