One of the Brisbane Lions’ most respected figures & long-time Board Member, Dr Mick Power AM, has been recognised among the State’s most outstanding contributors, honoured at the 2026 Queensland Day Awards at Parliament House.

The annual QLD Day Awards shine a spotlight on the individuals and organisations who embody the spirit of the Sunshine State and those who go above and beyond to support others and strengthen their communities. From grassroots volunteers to industry leaders, the awards celebrate the people who help make Queensland extraordinary.

Presented as a centrepiece of Queensland Day celebrations, the awards recognise contributions across a range of categories, acknowledging leadership, service and impact across the State. Among this year’s honourees, Dr Mick Power AM was named a Queensland Great, recognised in the Philanthropic category for his significant and enduring contribution to Queensland communities.

A Queensland Great

The Queensland Greats Awards recognise the trailblazers, innovators and community champions who have helped shape the State’s identity and future and whose work has left a lasting mark on Queensland. Dr Power’s recognition reflects decades of leadership and giving back.

A proud Queenslander, he founded the BMD Group in 1979 and has since grown the business into the largest privately owned civil construction and development group in the nation. Throughout that journey, he has consistently used business success as a platform to support people, causes and communities across the State.

His impact extends far beyond the construction industry. More than $2.4 million is directed annually into community investment and partnerships, supporting initiatives across disaster recovery, women’s sport, education, healthcare, veterans’ services and community development. In 2026, Dr Power further expanded his philanthropic footprint, launching a partnership with the Shake It Up Australia Foundation in honour of his late father, Dare Power, to support Parkinson’s research and awareness.

It is a body of work defined not only by generosity, but by deeply held values - resilience, practicality and a commitment to backing others when it matters most.

A Lifelong Connection to the Lions

Dr Power’s recognition holds particular significance for the Brisbane Lions community, where his connection spans more than two decades. A Club member since 2001 and part of the Lethal Lions coterie group since 2003, he has been a passionate supporter of the Club’s journey. His contribution deepened further when he joined the Brisbane Lions Board in 2010, later reaffirmed by members in 2014.

Across that time, he has played an important role in shaping the Club’s direction, while continuing to champion initiatives that strengthen both the Lions and the broader community. Beyond the Club, Dr Power’s leadership is reflected in his involvement across numerous organisations, including the Southbank Corporation, Mater Children’s Hospital Research Appeal, Queensland Surf Lifesaving Foundation and a range of community and charitable foundations.

Recognising Those Who Make Queensland Great

Dr Power’s honour sits alongside a diverse group of Queenslanders celebrated at this year’s QLD Day Awards. This includes individuals whose contributions reflect the values, resilience and community spirit that define the State. As Queensland prepares to celebrate its 2026 Queensland Day, the awards serve as a reminder that the State’s greatest strength lies in its people. For the Brisbane Lions, Dr Power’s recognition is not only a celebration of personal achievement, but a reflection of the Club’s broader connection to community, leadership and impact across Queensland.
