Brisbane Lions defender Ty Gallop has been named the Rising Star nominee for Round 16 following his impressive season to date.

Gallop, taken with Pick 42 in the 2024 national draft, was once again a key contributor in the Lions’ win over Sydney on Thursday night.

The Sunshine Coast local, who played junior football with Kawana Park and Maroochydore, has experienced an incredible start to his career.

After graduating from the Youi Brisbane Lions Academy, Gallop became a premiership player in his debut season as a forward last year.

However, in 2026 the 20-year-old moved to the backline where he has shown he is more than capable of performing a key role.

“It feels great to get a rising star nomination,” Gallop said

“The first 18 months of my AFL career have been a dream come true.

“I feel like I’ve managed to build as the season has gone on and I’m grateful that it’s been recognised.

“I have to give credit to the players and coaching staff surrounding me, the transition into the backline was good and the other boys down back have made it much easier.”

“Receiving the nomination while playing down back is good, I’m not sure if it locks me in as a defender for life, but it gives the confidence that I can play at both ends.”

Despite the Rising Star nomination and a strong win over Sydney, Gallop said the Lions have switched their attention to this Thursday’s clash.

“We have already moved out focus to Geelong this week,” Gallop said.

“I am looking forward to the game this week down there, it’ll be good to carry the momentum from last week into this game and hopefully get the job done.”
