The Brisbane Lions fell short against the Sydney Swans this afternoon at Sydney’s Tramway Oval, with the home side claiming an 11.12 (78) to 9.8 (62) victory in wet and windy conditions.

Round 17 of the Smithy’s VFL marked a special occasion for the McCarthy brothers who played their first VFL game together. Friday afternoon’s clash also saw the return of Oscar Allen and Lincoln McCarthy from injury.

Conditions were relatively dry for the opening bounce, although a strong wind made the contest difficult before the rain ultimately arrived later in the match. The Swans kicked straight into gear with Billy Cootee booting the first two majors to open the scoring. Brisbane responded through Sam Tilley. However, the Swans controlled the remainder of the quarter, adding another 3.3 while the Lions managed just two behinds to trail by 25 points at the first break.

The second term was a much tighter affair, with the Lions’ Sam Marshall booting a major at the 20 minute mark before Oscar Allen hit the scoreboard and Henry Smith added two quick goals in a matter of minutes. Dan Annable’s late behind reduced the margin to just seven points at half time.

Post the main break, the Sydney rain had well and truly set in, proving a slippery affair. Dan Annable opened the scoring with a behind, before Kobey Evans kicked Brisbane’s only goal of the term midway through the quarter.

Down by just 16 points there was still plenty for Brisbane to play for in the final term, Ben Murphy opened the scoring with a goal in the opening minutes. Sam Tilley added his second major of the afternoon before Tai Hayes also found the scoreboard to round out Brisbane’s game. The Swans did enough to keep the Lions at bay and secure their 16-point victory.

Sam Marshall and Dan Annable were busy in the midfield, collecting 30 and 28 disposals respectively. Youngster, Sam Tilley also impressed with 26 touches and two majors.

Next Saturday the Lions take on North Melbourne at Brighton Homes Arena for a 10:45am kick off for Round 18 of the Smithys VFL.
