As a player, Matthews was voted the AFL’s Player of the Century, named in the AFL Team of the Century and elevated to Legend status in the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Across 332 games for Hawthorn, he kicked 915 goals, won four premierships, claimed the 1975 Coleman Medal, earned eight club best and fairest awards and captained the Hawks from 1981 to 1985.
Matthews coached the Lions across 237 games from 1999 to 2008, recording 142 wins, three draws and 92 losses.
During that tenure he led the Club to the historic Premiership threepeat in 2001, 2002 and 2003 premierships, and a fourth consecutive Grand Final appearance in 2004.
