Lions coach Chris Fagan is probably quite happy that selection the past two weeks has been a much more clear-cut process than it was in Round 1 of the season.

If we believe the media prior to the season opener against West Coast, it was an excruciating choice for Fagan and his selection panel between Stefan Martin and Archie Smith for the No.1 ruck job.

But since then, in a surprising statistic unearthed by the Stats File team, it’s been quite the opposite.

After Fagan last night hung out the ‘no change’ sign for tomorrow night’s Gabba clash with Port Adelaide the Lions will field the same team for the third week in a row for just the fourth time in club history.

Oddly, only 30 times has the ‘no change’ side been needed since the birth of the club in 1987.

Fagan, who will coach only his 47th game tomorrow night, can claim two of the three-in-a-row streaks and eight of the total number of unchanged teams week to week.

Having been brought to the club on a platform of development and solidarity, the former Hawthorn director of coaching has delivered in spades.

In total, Fagan has averaged 1.93 changes per match. Only three times has he made more than three changes in a week, and only 13 times has he made more than two changes.

By comparison, in the three years prior to Fagan’s appointment, Justin Leppitsch averaged 2.63 changes per match and only once fielded the same side in consecutive matches.

He made more than three changes 10 times, and more than two changes 30 times.

Fagan will be looking for his first win over Port as the Lions looks to arrest a five-game losing streak overall against Port dating back to Round 7 2015, when Brisbane won by 37 points at the Gabba.

Only seven members of the Lions side from that day will play tomorrow night – Harris Andrews, Darcy Gardiner, Stef Martin, Daniel Rich, Mitch Robinson and Dayne Zorko.

Tom Rockliff, also a member of the Brisbane side that night, will play against the Lions at the Gabba for the first time after a win over his former side in their first meeting at the Adelaide Oval in Round 3 last year.

Zac Bailey and Oscar McInerney will play against Port for the first time, and Jarrod Berry, Eric Hipwood, Rhys Mathieson, Hugh McCluggage, Cam Rayner and Alex Witherden will be chasing their first win against the Power, and Ryan Bastinac, Charlie Cameron and Josh Walker will be after their first win against the Power in Lions colors.

Collectively, the Lions will be looking to win their first three games of the season for the first time since 2010, when they won on the trot to open their campaign.
