There’s nothing quite like a win over the old club. Just ask Charlie Cameron. Or Jarryd Lyons.

Cameron had his first meeting with former Adelaide teammates at the Gabba on Saturday afternoon and flat out loved it.

In the lead-up he sent a bunch of cheeky text messages to some of his good mates in Adelaide, and then produced an exhilarating performance in the Lions’ one-point win.

After going 5-0 against Brisbane during his time in Adelaide he is now 1-0 against the club with which he played in the 2017 AFL grand final.

He had 16 disposals, three tackles and a career-high eight scoring shots – three goals five behinds - and while he would have preferred 5-3, or better, he was beaming as his shook hands with his former teammates at the final siren.

In his 93rd AFL game the win in his 20th game for the Lions saw Cameron complete an AFL grand slam - a career win over every club in the competition.

Yes, it was a memorable night.

Lyons, too, relished the moment. The former Adelaide and Gold Coast midfielder had 21 disposals, 11 tackles, five clearances and a goal.

After a win over the Gold Coast in Round 6 he, too, has a grand slam on his CV after his first career win over Adelaide after going 0-2 against Adelaide with Gold Coast.

It was also the 50th win of Lyons’ 101-game AFL career.

The Cameron/Lyons grand slams are the fourth and fifth among current Lions players and have come after Ryan Bastinac completed his grand slam in Round 2 this year with his first win over North Melbourne.

Mitch Robinson, who kicked his 100th career goal on Saturday, did likewise in his first season in Brisbane in 2015 when he tasted victory against former club Carlton plus Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs for the first time.

Luke Hodge completed a grand final last year in his first game against Hawthorn.

Chasing a grand slam this weekend while Lachie Neale, who will confront his former club Fremantle for the first time in Perth.

Coach Chris Fagan now has 10 different scalps on his career win list, having added Adelaide to first-time wins this season over West Coast, North, Port Adelaide and Sydney.

The Lions’ last-gasp win over Adelaide on Saturday also continued the club’s 2019 assault on long losing streaks,

It was their first win over Adelaide since 2012 after seven losses in a row.

This came after their Round 1 win over West Coast ended a seven-game losing streak against the 2018 premiers dating back to 2012, and the Round 2 win over North was their first since 2014 after six consecutive losses.

The win over Port Adelaide in Round 3 ended a five-game losing streak back to 2015, and the Round 7 win over Sydney killed off an 11-game losing streak from 2009.

All this has come as the Lions, sitting fourth on the ladder, enjoy a 6-3 start to the season, or better, for the first time in 15 years and just the sixth time in the club’s 33-year history.

They started 7-2 in 1996, 6-3 in 1999 and 7-2 in 2002, and had seven wins and a draw from nine games in 2003 before a 6-3 start in 2004.

It is the first time since 2004 the Lions have been as high on the ladder this far into the season.
