Brisbane Lions AFLW forward Bella Ayre informed the Club last night of her decision to retire, effective immediately.

Ayre was unavailable for the 2019 AFLW season, after suffering a number of injury setbacks.

The 20-year-old has decided to prioritise her physical and emotional health and is focused on pursuing her dream of joining the police force.

Lions AFLW CEO Breeanna Brock said Ayre had been tough during a challenging personal time.

“This is not great news to hear from a 20-year-old, but her body hasn’t had the easiest run,” she said.

“She’s exhausted from the injury rollercoaster she’s been on for three years and just wants to have some time away from footy.

“She’s been a trooper through it all and one of the most determined people I’ve seen in her efforts to recover

“She’s certainly a tough one.”

Ayre will soon depart Brisbane and return home for Bendigo.
