History will be in the making when the Fitzroy-Brisbane Lions Historical Society launch a stunning new display as part of their Museum Open Day celebrations this Sunday 7 July.

The special display, painstakingly put together by the Historical Society Committee, will feature a photo of every player that represented Fitzroy in a senior match from 1897-1996.

“I’ve thought for a while we should have in the Museum a photo of every player that played for Fitzroy,” said Historical Society Chairman and recent recipient of an OAM Arthur Wilson. “We’ve found around 950 photos out of the 1150 Fitzroy players, which we’re pretty pleased with considering a lot of those players played in the 1800s, so it’s a lot more difficult getting those photos.”

The six-metre long display features every player in alphabetical order, and will act as a wonderful tribute for families, friends and fans to appreciate for years to come.

The unveiling of the photographic display will be one of the many highlights of the Museum Open Day, which will run from 11am-2.30pm at its home within Marvel Stadium. A number of past players will be in attendance, along with plenty of Fitzroy and Brisbane Lions memorabilia available for purchase at discounted rates. There will also be the rare opportunity for guests to have a photo taken with one of Fitzroy’s Premiership Cups, that form one of the prized displays in the museum.

Sam Lord, Victorian Manager of the Brisbane Lions, would like to see the Museum full of Lions fans on Sunday.

“Supporters who visit the Museum for the first time are often left speechless by the collection that has been tirelessly put together by Arthur and his team. The latest photographic display is another example of their care and effort to preserve and celebrate the rich history of the Fitzroy Football Club, which is critical to the future of the Brisbane Lions.”

“It’s great to have such a wonderful museum. It’s even better to have as many Lions fans enjoying the collection together. Whether you’ve been before or always wanted to visit, we’d love to see you there this Sunday,” Sam said.

The Historical Society Museum Open Day starts from 11am-2.30pm and is FREE for Historical Society members, past players and children. Entry is $5 for non-members and guests. The Museum is located at Marvel Stadium, entry via Gate 4 lifts (level D).
