With only five days to go until the second AFLW season begins for the Brisbane Lions, Head Coach Craig Starcevich says the team is full of motivation as they push to go one better than 2017.

A strong start to the season on the road will be pivotal for the Lions as it proved key to an undefeated 2017 regular season.

"If you can get some momentum and belief early - we had two away wins on the trot [last year], which gave the group self-belief early and let that roll through," Starcevich said.

“We had this thought going all summer with our crew to not think that last year’s ladder positions are an indicator for this year.

"We have a bit of a chip on our shoulder about proving ourselves. That's another driving force behind our team."

Starcevich is anticipating plenty of changes to AFLW following the 2017 season.

"Our players spend more times at their state league clubs that they do at their AFLW clubs. That's a challenge for all of us and that's going to be addressed post this season," Starcevich said.

"I'm sure if you want to keep attracting the best female athletes you want to get this competition out to 10 or 11 weeks to attract the best."

The Lions start their 2018 AFLW season on Saturday night against the Adelaide Crows at Norwood Oval in Adelaide. The match begins at 6.15pm (AEST) and will be live on 7mate, Fox Footy and the AFLW official App.
