Lions accept pick No.39 for Leuenberger

The Club yesterday accepted a compensation pick of No.39 for ruckman Matthew Leuenberger.

Leuenberger, a restricted free agent nominated Essendon as his club of choice on Monday.

The Bombers lodged the official paperwork with the AFL later that afternoon and on Tuesday the Lions were informed of their compensation. The Club was given 72 hours to either match the offer or accept the compensation.

While disappointed with the pick offered by the AFL, the Club said it would not stand in the way of Leuenberger joining Essendon given his many years of service to the Lions.

CEO Greg Swann said the Club had settled on Stefan Martin as its preferred ruckman and had opened the door for Leuenberger to explore other options.

“He can't play on here in the position he wants to play, so we were happy for him to explore other options - although we still would have expected better compensation for him,” Swann said.

“At the end of the day we want to make sure things work out for him, given his service to the Club, and we wish him all the best in the future.”
