Earlier this evening at the 2020 Toyota AFL Season Launch, the Brisbane Lions emphatically declared in front of players, coaches, sponsors, media and supporters that this year they intend to break the Club’s all-time membership record by enlisting 31,000 members before the Club’s Double Header against the Kangaroos at The Gabba on Saturday 28 March.

The Lions highest membership tally as it stands is 30,941 for the 2004 AFL Premiership Season. The Club are already up by 6,000 memberships year-on-year.

Lions CEO Greg Swann said the Club wanted to be bold in 2020 by welcoming a new generation of supporters into the pride.

“Over the past three years our membership has steadily increased, so we wanted to be ambitious with our next goal by breaking our overall membership record,” Swann said.

“In 2020 we want to start a new era at the Brisbane Lions by encouraging a whole new generation of supporters to sign on as members.

“Our success on field in the men’s 2019 season attracted a new supporter base to The Gabba.

“We hope they return this season with a membership in hand, watching our exciting players take to the field.

“The current record was off the back of three incredible AFL Premierships, but we think it’s a new era at the Lions, now that we have both men’s and women’s teams vying for a premiership.

“Our future goal over the next few seasons will be to reach 40,000 members.”

Senior Coach Chris Fagan implored fans to convert their support into a Lions membership.

“If we want to become a great team, we need to play in a finals-like environment on a regular basis,” Fagan said.

“We need our supporters to come out and watch us play.

“We’re asking you to help us break the record by Round 2 in 2020.”

The Lions will aim to reach 31,000 members before the Lions AFLW Round 8 and AFL Round 2 Double Header against North Melbourne at The Gabba on Saturday 28 March.
