BRISBANE Lions Brownlow Medallist Simon Black has implored his teammates to keep their chins up and fight through a worrying four-game slump together.

After a perfect first month of football, the Lions lost their fourth game in succession on Saturday night after being mauled by 81 points at the hands of Geelong.

A sombre Black admitted post-match the team had lost some confidence, but said coach Michael Voss’s game style was a winner that needed to be stuck to.

“I think guys have lost a bit of confidence,” he said.

“Skills have dropped away and probably our tackling pressure on the opposition has dropped away a bit, but I think it’s a bit of confidence.

“It’ll probably be pretty hard [to turn things around] from where we are at the moment."

Black pointed to a need for the club to band together in times of bleakness.

“An AFL footy season,  you get your tough phases and you have to be strong mentally and ride it out to the end," he said.

"You can’t let it beat you when you’re down, you have to fight through it, fight through it and fight through it together.”

Even after 262 games, Black said losses like Saturday night still hurt.

He waged an all-night war with Cat Cameron Ling, and while Black had a good night with 24 touches, it was of little consolation.

“They are a very slick outfit. We were very ordinary and they were great and gave us a good lesson,” he said.

“We probably built ourselves up for a game like that tonight and obviously we’re a long way off the mark so it does hurt.

“Our skills were so poor we just kept turning the ball over and we lost confidence because of it. We’re just not up to scratch clearly at the moment.”

Black said in many respects the Lions were trying to emulate the gameplan of the team he still rates as the benchmark of the competition.

“We got the footy but didn’t use it as well and they got it and used it a lot better and their see-it-and-give-it way they play it is just exceptional; something we aspire to.

“Maybe one day we can get to that level.”
