Daniel Merrett's brilliant third quarter goal against North Melbourne last Sunday has been nominated for the Round 9 Origin Goal of the Year.

Merrett's sensational solo effort saw him intercept a kick from Kangaroos opponent Scott Thompson while standing the mark, before twisting, turning, and cleverly dribbling the ball through for a goal using the outside of his right boot.

The goal also came at a critical moment of the game as the Lions surged to within four goals nearing the three quarter time siren.

Merrett is one of three nominees vying for for this week's Goal of the Year honour - along with Kieran Harper (North Melbourne) and Will Schofield (West Coast) - with an online vote to determine the eventual winner.

Lions fans are encouraged to CLICK HERE and cast their votes now for big 'Rog'. You can watch a replay at the bottom of this page.

Fans who vote will also go into the running for the major prize draw thanks to Origin.

Voting is open now and will close NEXT Monday 4 June at 12pm.

At the conclusion of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season, the All-Australian Selection Committee shall select the three best goals and marks from the 23 weekly selections from the AFL panel, along with any public selections that differ.
