Fans with a keen eye may have noticed the Lions AFLW team warming up in something a bit different to a traditional warm-up tee this season.

At the start of this year the team made the decision to support a fundamentally important movement for the countries First People.

The Aboriginal flag is not only a national symbol it is a central part of First People's national identity. It was proclaimed as a National Flag of Australia in 1995 and it should be free of licensing restrictions that currently limit its use. The Aboriginal Flag is the only proclaimed National Flag that is privately owned, copyrighted and licensed.

It was a no-brainer for the team to swap out their traditional warm-up tee for the Free the Flag tee they have worn all year to continue to give the campaign the momentum it deserves.

Senior player and proud Ghungalu womanAlly Anderson, believes it is important to continue to spark conversation about the importance of the flag to our nation’s First People

It’s great that the League has introduced Indigenous Round to celebrate the nation’s First People this year,” Anderson said.

As a team we thought in addition to this we wanted to highlight an important indigenous issue for the entire season in the Free the Flag campaign.

“The flag is such a significant and unifying symbol for indigenous people, and it should be free for all to use and celebrate.

“We hope that this small gesture helps to continue the momentum of the campaign until this issue is resolved.”
