The jet-heeled defender underwent surgery this week after scans revealed he had fractured his 4th metacarpal.

He had been playing a key role in the Lions’ defence in the absence of established duo Darcy Gardiner and Ryan Lester.

The 21-year-old is with the team in Melbourne and Lions High-Performance Manager Damien Austin said his training would not be too disrupted and he was confident Madden could make a quick return to action.

“He’s had the operation, it went well, and it should only hold him out for one to two weeks,’’ he said.

Veteran Lester is progressing well from a hamstring injury and has also joined the team in Melbourne while Grant Birchall is also available after being a late withdrawal last week due to illness.

Austin also revealed midfielder Ely Smith is available to play after overcoming an ankle injury.

The AFL has announced a VFL fixture change for this weekend which hands the Lions the bye this weekend as there is an extended squad in Melbourne, meaning Smith faces another week of training back in Brisbane before he can play a game.

That extra week off means Nakia Cockatoo and Cam Ellis Yolmen may also be ready to push for selection.
