Lions Medical Staff are confident ruckman Stefan Martin will make his return against Carlton, following a heavy hit to his ribs when he collided with the Giants’ Steve Johnson two weeks ago.

In further good news, Tom Bell may make a return before the season’s end, recovering ahead of schedule from surgery on his knee earlier this year.

Meanwhile, hard-runner Rohan Bewick will require further testing this week for an ongoing groin issue.

“We’ve been able to manage it through most of the year but it’s just sort of struggling in the last couple of weeks,” Lions Head of Physiotherapy Shane Lemcke said.

“He’s undergoing some further tests this week and it will determine whether he will play any further part in the rest of the season.”

Scans have also revealed the full extent of Jonathan Freeman’s eye injury sustained in the NEAFL last weekend.

What was originally thought to be a one-week injury, has now brought Freeman’s season to a halt.

“Further testing yesterday actually revealed a tear to his retina,” Lemcke said.

“He’ll need to undergo a minor procedure on Thursday to fix that and he’s unlikely to take part in the rest of the season.”

Young Lion Josh Watts is on track to make his return next year after undergoing a second surgery on his hip yesterday.

Shane Lemcke revealed that the procedure on Watt’s left hip went well, following another minor surgery on his right hip two weeks ago.

“Hopefully that that will be the end of his groin issues and he should be able to take next year without any problems,” Lemcke said.
