The Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast Suns played out a thriller at Moreton Bay Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon, with the Suns narrowly coming out two-point victors in a seesawing match.

Tom Fullarton was busy early for the Lions, kicking two of their four majors in the opening quarter, helping the home side to a tight seven-point lead at the first break.

Brisbane came out firing in the second quarter with Kai Lohmann and Henry Smith both getting on the scoreboard within the first five minutes. Darcy Fort gave his midfielders first use through the ruck after being activated as medical sub in the Lions win over their state rivals the night prior.

The Lions hot start was soured by shoulder injuries to both Carter Michael and Tom Berry, limiting Brisbane to just three on the bench for the remainder of the match.

Down by 22-points at halftime, Gold Coast's response in the second half was swift, firing back with a seven goal quarter to claw the margin back to just two-points going into the last.

Brisbane had their chances late in the game to take the lead but the Suns defence proved too strong.

Deven Robertson was best-on-ground for the Lions as he continues to push his case for a spot in Chris Fagan's side. The 21-year-old showcased his physicality with seven tackles, five clearances, five inside 50s and a goal from his 25 disposals.

Kai Lohmann was dominant in the air, clunking a game-high 11 marks alongside his 22 touches and one goal. Tom Fullarton finished the day with four majors while Ryan Lester continued to show his class with 19 disposals, eight marks and six tackles.

Brisbane will now head south to take on Richmond at the Swinburne Centre on Sunday 31 July at 11:05am.
