Gary Ablett isn’t the only Gold Coast midfielder that will require serious attention this Saturday evening when the Lions host QClash 6 at the Gabba.
Ablett is still regarded as the competition’s best player, but is no longer carries the bulk of his team’s midfield duties on his own.
In fact, the SUNS’ skipper is arguably a more dangerous proposition now, given the emergence of Rising Stars Jaeger O’Meara and Dion Prestia.
Prestia collected a career-best 42 disposals against Adelaide last Saturday, while O’Meara has amassed career-best totals of 30 and 32 possessions in his past two matches against the Bombers and Crows.
O’Meara’s stunning debut season, in which he’s averaged 23 disposals, has received lavish praise from media commentators.
AFL Hall of Fame member Tim Watson even went so far to suggest that he has the potential to become the greatest midfielder in the history of the game.
"Jaeger O'Meara could quite well go down in history as the greatest midfielder that's ever played the game," Watson told Melbourne radio station SEN on Monday morning.
"He is unbelievable. You've got to keep reminding yourself that here is a kid in his first season of AFL football at 18 years of age. He has it all.”
The SUNS’ emerging midfield has been one of the key reasons behind their best AFL season to date.
“They’ve been impressive in the past couple of games, so we’ll have to make sure we’re at our best shutting out their midfield brigade,” Lions Assistant Coach Murray Davis told LIONS TV as part of the Vero Coaches’ Wrap.
“They’re obviously very highly skilled and run hard both ways. So we’ll make sure we’re really good in that area.
“For us, it’s about winning our one-on-one battles and making sure we go into the game with that focus.”
The Lions will also be hoping that a parochial home crowd can help the team secure their fifth straight win over their cross-town rivals.
“We love playing in front of our members and supporters here at the Gabba and we hope they get along,” Davis said.
“We gave them a great game here last time against Geelong, and we’re hopeful they’ll be there to see another great performance from our lads on Saturday evening.”
