Beginning her footballing journey as a 14-year-old, Rhani Dodd grew up in the Rugby League mad Bundaberg before a switch to AFL put her on a different path. 

After playing two seasons with Across the Waves Bundaberg AFC, Rhani was asked to join the Youi Brisbane Lions Academy, under the watchful eye of Lions AFLW Premiership captain, Emma Zielke.  

Rhani would spend eight hours in the car driving the 390 kilometres from Bundaberg to Brighton Homes Arena and back to ensure she could get to every training session. 

“It was pretty draining, because I’d have to go to school the next day, leave school early, sleep in the car but it was all worth it. 

“But the support from the coaching staff was great, making sure I was stretching and getting out and walking around every couple of hours on the way down and back.” 

Rhani with help from Lions Legacy and the Youi Brisbane Lions Academy was able to grow and develop as not only a footballer but as a person. 

A member of the second Cohort of the Brisbane Lions Institute of Business and Sport, Rhani is incredibly grateful for the support of Lions Legacy. 

“When the move from Bundy was all coming together, Lions Legacy were great at keeping in touch and making sure I was being supported through the whole way,” she said. 

“Not just financially but their support to help move me down and do the TAFE course which has been great.  

“I probably wouldn't have been able to do it all by myself if it wasn't for them.” 

Since ending her time playing for the Youi Lions Academy, the 18-year-old has continued to be supported by Lions Legacy, helping her land a job with Rebel Sport as she continues to play football for Sandgate following her move to Brisbane to pursue her studies.
