Dual premiership defender Darcy Wilmot has further committed his future to the Brisbane Lions by signing a two-year contract extension.

Wilmot, who was already contracted for the next two seasons, will now remain a Lion until at least the end of 2029.

The 21-year-old was a bolter in the 2021 draft when the Lions selected him with Pick 16 from the Northern Knights and has since become a key player in two flags for the Club.

Now the dashing defender from Victoria said he feels at home as a Lion in Brisbane and is excited about the years to come.

“It feels good to re-sign and it was an easy decision as I couldn’t see myself playing anywhere else because I absolutely love it here at the Lions,” Wilmot said. “I love the boys, the footy Club and Brisbane in general - as it’s a great place, so I am very excited about what’s to come for both our footy Club and the city. “I have loved my time at the Club so far and I am very fortunate to be able to be a part of this exciting period.

“Now that I have extended, I want to keep working on trying to become better and better each game, keep performing consistently and helping the team. “And as a team obviously get to work and like any club, we want to experience the ultimate goal and just keep having fun and enjoying this period of our lives.” The energetic Lion has experienced an incredible start to his AFL career, which is fitting given he and his family live by a phrase of doing things ‘The Wilmot Way’.

Wilmot made his debut against Richmond in an elimination final at the Gabba back in 2022 and has since played in 11 finals, three grand finals and two premierships. Brisbane Lions General Manager Football, Danny Daly said having Wilmot further extend his contract was fantastic news for the Club.

“We are absolutely thrilled to have Darcy signed on until 2029 and we have no doubt his teammates and the Brisbane Lions fans will be equally as happy,” Daly said. “We knew when we drafted him that he had plenty of ability and potential, and to his credit and our coaching staff he has developed into a top defender. “We are also quite proud of the person he has become and how he conducts himself, he does things his own way, but he is a great person with very good values.

“Darcy has been a key player in helping us experience success and we look forward to many more years of having him, his partner Dion and their families at the Club.”
