The iconic maroon guernsey with white FFC monogram was last worn in 2016, but is more synonymous as the guernsey worn by Fitzroy Legend Kevin Murray throughout most of his 333-game career.
The club has also finalised a new multi-year sponsorship with community club Fitzroy FC which will assist their football operations at the Lions original home of Brunswick Street Oval.
Fitzroy Football Club plays on the historic Brunswick Street Oval every week during the footy season and in 2026 will field eight teams – five men’s teams and three women’s sides.
Brisbane Lions Chief Executive, Sam Graham said Fitzroy is our DNA and it’s important for our club to retain the connection with our history and traditional heartland as much as possible.
“2026 marks 30 years since the historic merger of the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions to create the Brisbane Lions, but we also felt it was critical to salute our Fitzroy base and the growing number of fans and members we have in Victoria.
“Since the merger, there has been so much work done by so many people to ensure the Brisbane Lions is a football club all our fans are proud to support.
“We’ve been fortunate to visit Brunswick Street Oval as Premiers for the past two years, the design of our main grandstand at Brighton Homes Arena is based on the design of our traditional home and now we’re entering into a new partnership with Fitzroy FC to support our grassroot participants.”
Lions Co-Captain Josh Dunkley said he was looking forward to donning the maroon and blue to represent the Fitzroy faithful.
“Our club has such a great history so I think it’s really important that we continue to pay homage to both Fitzroy and the Bears whenever we can,” Dunkley said
“For someone who grew up in Victoria and lived in Melbourne I know how passionate our Fitzroy support is and us boys can’t wait to wear this special guernsey against the Saints in Melbourne.”
David Leydon, President of the Fitzroy Football Club, echoes these sentiments. “Our players and supporters are all very aware and very proud of our 143-year history.
“We’re excited to be cementing our ties with the Brisbane Lions with this important new partnership. It’s a clear nod to our enduring historical ties and will help us write a new chapter at Fitzroy,’’ he said.
“The new partnership will go a long way to ensuring Fitzroy Football Club remains strong for many years to come at our original home at the beautiful Brunswick Street Oval,'' Leydon said.
“Lions supporters, old and new, from Brisbane or Victoria, are always welcome at our very special ground.”
