Port Melbourne delivered a six goal to one final term to run out 45-point winners over the Lions (13.11.89 to 6.8.44) in Rd 5 of the Smithy’s VFL, earlier today.

In windy conditions at Springfield, the Lions had plenty of possession early in the first quarter but couldn’t capitalise, booting 2.5 with goals to Wil McLachlan and Charlie Offermans.

The Borough hit back with two late goals before the siren, to see the Lions take a slender five-point margin at the end of the first.

Lions Coach, Scott Borlace called for composure at the break and the Lions responded with Youi Academy product Isaac Waller goaling early in the second to take the Lions out to an 11-point lead.

From there, Port used the breeze to their advantage, wrestling momentum from the home team to kick 3.4 with two majors to Josh Tovey, who had a day out for the visitors, kicking five for the match to give the Borough an 11-point buffer at half time.

The third was an arm wrestle early, with plenty of congestion around the ball making it tough for both sides.

Reece Torrent was influential, finding space through the middle, then Tai Hayes kicked true in the 12th minute to get the Lions within a kick and when Jake Fazldeen goaled moments later the Lions were up by one. Port then hit back with back-to-back goals taking leaving the Lions within two majors at three quarter time.

Unfortunately for the Lions, the final term was largely one way traffic.

In his second VFL match for the Lions, Liam Jones kicked his first in the maroon, blue and gold early in the final term, before Port piled on 6.5 to run away with the four points and a comprehensive 45-point win.

The Lions take on Coburg at Barry Plant Park in Rd 6 of Smithy’s VFL on Saturday 2 May with the first ball up at 1.05pm
