There have been ten new faces at the Brisbane Lions' pre-season training this week.

Father-son prospects Casey Voss and Lachlan Johnson have come up from Adelaide and Melbourne respectively, while six Lions Academy and two Northern Territory Academy players have also been training with the team.

Changes to the AFL National Academy means it's more likely young players from different regions will come and train with the team in the future.

Lions Academy and NEAFL Operations Manager Luke Curran said the changes will benefit the Lions.

"The National Academy has expanded for 2018/19. Previously there were only two squads of about 70 players," Curran said.

"The AFL earlier this year changed it about to include more players from around the country.

"Now there are approximately 150 players involved across different hubs. We're part of the Allies hub which includes Queensland, NSW, NT and Tasmania.

"Previously we've had one or two boys involved, whereas going into 2019 we will have six boys involved which is a great opportunity for them to gain experience outside our Academy program."

Joel Jeffrey and Malcolm Rosas from the NT Academy have impressed at training so far.

"They are doing similar programs to what the new draftees are doing - more skill work and a little bit of conditioning," Curran said.

"They are watching more of the contested work and talking to Josh Hunt about what the players are doing during the session."

Voss and Johnson, who have both spent stints training with the team in the past, has developed well over the years according to Curran.

"Everytime they come up they've changed. They are still growing a bit," Curran said.

"We are keen to work with them for a little bit longer and give them opportunities to access our program. Then we will monitor them next year and see how they go.

"We've got a really good relationship with Lachlan, Chris [Johnson] and the family, so it was a pretty easy decision for Lachlan to come up and spend more time at the Club."

The Lions finish pre-season training for the year on Friday, returning on January 7.
