We take a look at what's been said in the media since our Round 21 game against the Blues.

AFL.com.au has said:

The Lions have some genuine competition for their tall forward spots

In an area of the ground that has haunted the club since late in Jonathan Brown's decorated career, the Lions have unearthed some exciting prospects this season. First-round draft picks Josh Schache – now on ice for the year after carrying a huge workload – and Eric Hipwood have provided more than could have been hoped for.

Recruited Cat Josh Walker (18 goals in 13 games) has been serviceable off limited supply, and against Carlton, it was Michael Close's turn to step up with four goals. Close ruptured his ACL in round two last season and took much of this year to regain his confidence back through the NEAFL.

Saturday was just his second senior outing for the season, and the 22-year-old showed strong hands and a nice set shot to put his name well and truly in the frame for a regular berth in 2017.

The Magnificent Zorko

Dayne Zorko has had a below-average few weeks by his lofty standards, but his first half against the Blues was nothing short of outstanding. He had 19 disposals and kicked three goals by half-time, and was clearly the best player on the ground.

When he slowed in the second half, it was no coincidence the Lions did too. Zorko (27 disposals) was ably supported by captain Tom Rockliff (a casual 39 disposals, 12 tackles and two goals) and Mitch Robinson, who took a game-saving mark against his old club in the final minute.

The Lions' Close call

Before his four-goal game against Carlton, it could be said Michael Close was best known for tearing his ACL on the artificial turf at Etihad Stadium last year. But against an undersized Sam Rowe, and playing just his second game for the year, Close was excellent.

He was a constant target for the Lions midfielders, making contests and bringing the ball to ground. The 22-year-old kicked the first goal of the fourth quarter after Carlton had dominated the third, and appears to be yet another promising young key forward on the Lions' list.

What Mark Robinson said in his 'Likes and Dislikes' for the Herald Sun:

Rockliff and Zorko

Played like Patrick Dangerfield and Joel Selwood at their best and there’s a couple of Carlton midfielders who would be disappointed with their defensive capabilities.

The Brisbane duo combined for 66 disposals, 12 marks, 16 tackles, nine clearances, 17 inside 50s and five goals and gave coach Justin Leppitsch some joy. Nice to see Michael Close up forward as well.
