BRISBANE Lions midfielder Luke Power has said his side’s performance in their 37-point loss to the Bombers at the Telstra Dome on Saturday night demonstrated the best and the worst of what the Queensland side has to offer.

It was the Lions’ second straight loss after their shock one point loss to Melbourne in round 14.

“It was a reflection of our best football and our worst football and they are poles apart,” Power said.

“If you’re going to be a good side, you’ve got to be able to maintain that standard for the whole game. That’s just something we couldn’t do. Full credit to Essendon. They were too strong with too many runners through the midfield. They out worked us, they out muscled us and they deserved to win.”

The Lions maintain seventh position on the ladder ahead of the Saints despite the loss but Power was quick to admit that a top four spot isn’t on the squad’s radar.

“I think that we’ll play finals football and once you do that who knows what can happen. I don’t think we’re near being a top four side at the moment. We haven’t beaten anyone in the top four and we’ve dropped games against Melbourne and Essendon which top four sides don’t do.”

The 28-year-old denied that his side still relies too heavily on their big names.

“I think when we play good football we have an even spread across the board. We’ve got a lot of players that will eventually put their hands up and take over. They’re training hard, you can’t question their commitment so it’s only a matter of time.”

After a bad run of luck with Melbourne fixtures of late, Power admitted that the playing group is looking forward to returning to the Gabba next weekend.

“The past three times we’ve played here we’ve had pretty bad losses so it will be good to play West Coast in Brisbane next week.”
