The development of a new training and administration base out at Springfield remains firmly on the Brisbane Lions’ agenda, despite media reports that the Federal Government had withdrawn its funding for the project.

The Lions were initially granted $15 million to help build the facility in August last year, but a change in Government has complicated matters.

Nevertheless, Lions Chairman Bob Sharpless says the project is still very much alive and remains confident the Club can secure the funds required.

“The club believes the best position is the Springfield move, the AFL is strongly behind it and rates it as a priority,” Mr Sharpless told The Courier Mail.

“It has become harder because of the change of Government, but the merits of the facility have not changed and I think the new Government acknowledge that it is a very good project.”

In the meantime, Sharpless said that the Club would begin examining potential back-up options.

“I think there is a view there we need to have a plan B,” Mr Sharpless said.

“But I don’t see that as taking away the preference to go to Springfield, it is just being prudent if for whatever reason the issue does become protracted.”

“It is not inappropriate for us to think about other alternatives if this becomes difficult or too protracted, or ultimately if the funding doesn’t become available, that’s our view.”
