Gold Coast veteran Campbell Brown says this Saturday night’s QClash is a “huge game” for his side as they attempt to arrest a four-game losing streak against cross-town rivals, the Brisbane Lions.
But the Lions are also determined to continue their recent dominance against the SUNS, particularly considering their ‘little brothers’ current sit ahead of them on the AFL ladder.
Brown told the Gold Coast media on Wednesday that QClash 6 was critically important in the context of their season.
“We understand Brisbane have the wood over us having won the last four matches against us,” Brown said.
“We won the first ever QCLASH but after that it’s been all Brisbane so we need to start evening up that ledger a little bit.
“We need a win, we’ve won one game in five weeks of football so while everyone has been giving us a pat on the back because we have been competitive against some good sides the fact of the matter is we haven’t got the four points on too many occasions.
“It’s a huge game for the club, if we want to continue to look towards playing later in the year we need to start winning games of football, and we need to start winning this weekend.”
With the past two matches being decided by a combined total of just 13 points, Brown is expecting another close contest at the Gabba on Saturday night.
“They’ve always been really close games and really fantastic contests,” he said.
“It just happens that Brisbane have ended up in front, they love the QCLASH just as much as we do and close games like that always make for better contests.”
The Lions are unlikely to regain full-back Daniel Merrett for the match, while Sam Docherty will miss with a back injury.
The SUNS, meanwhile, will welcome back handy utility Luke Russell, with Charlie Dixon and Harley Bennell also chances of returning.
The final teams will be announced at 6:25pm tonight on lions.com.au
