Lions' chance for redemption
Brisbane Lions coach sticks by the same 22 that lost to the Western Bulldogs by 65 points last weekend despite criticising effort of his side
The Lions have named an unchanged side to take on the Tigers after last weekend's thrashing by the Bulldogs, with Voss looking for consistency in his line-up.
“I thought we quit (last week),” Voss said.
“We acknowledge the effort wasn’t good enough. I felt it was important we settled them down and they got familiar with one another ... and for them after last week to be able to come back and make a fist of it this week.”
While the Lions will again be without injured captain Jonathan Brown, Voss said playing without their inspirational skipper was no excuse for a lack of effort in games.
“We’ve got to be better than that now,” Voss said.
“It’s not who is in the jumper, it’s the way you go about it.
“There are two things you want to be able to get out of the games; one is four points, the other one is real serious competitiveness. When you don’t get either, you walk away with a very, very sour taste in your mouth.”
James Polkinghorne will sit out another week with a corked thigh as the Lions' wretched injury run continues. Voss said Polkinghorne spent four days in hospital with bleeding in his leg.
“He is up and moving now which is good but it has taken a couple of weeks," Voss said of the 20-year-old.
“The boys are bagging him a bit for missing with a bruise, but it was pretty significant.”
Voss said Brendan Fevola needs to be given more opportunities after being held to two goals against the Bulldogs.
“One of the things is we didn’t get the ball down there often enough,” Voss said.
“We weren’t clean going down there, but we just didn’t get it there enough times.”
The Lions sit precariously in 11th place heading into the split round, but Voss said it was no time to panic.
“It’s important that we don’t become desperate,” Voss said.
“If you put desperation into it then we can sort of get desperate acts in the wrong way.
“I’m pretty content with the way the players are trying to approach games. We’ve just got to make sure we finish them off."
