AFL introduction for Lion cubs
The Lions draftees will undergo an in-depth AFLPA induction process in Melbourne this week.
The Lions players will spend two days with 120 other first-year players in a range of planned educational sessions which are designed to provide guidance and information about their journey as an AFL player.
The seminar is being held at the MCG and will cover a range of topics including life skills, decision making, diversity in the AFL, respect and responsibility, illicit drugs and gambling.
AFLPA General Manager of Player Development Steven Alessio said the Induction Camp was just the start of a comprehensive program that would continue throughout the players’ careers and beyond.
“This Association was created by the players, and it exists for the players,” Alessio said.
“We have to remember that these players are all still for the most part very young and about to step into a world that features a range of challenges for someone just reaching adulthood.”
“The AFL Players’ Association is full of people who understand what it means to be in these kids’ shoes,” he said.
“We know about the pressures and pitfalls of life as an AFL player and so are ideally placed to provide support, information and advice.”
Lions General Manager of Football Operations Dean Warren believes the Induction Camp is a fantastic initiative from the AFLPA.
“Our Club really values the AFLPA induction process as an effective educational tool for our younger players,” Warren said.
“These young men are about to embark on a set of new challenges - both personally and professionally - and it’s critical that they are prepared for what lies ahead.”
