Turn around starts now
Michael Voss says a win against Greater Western Sydney is a must if the Lions are to turn around their season
BRISBANE Lions coach Michael Voss says a win against Greater Western Sydney on Sunday is essential to turning around the team's fortunes.
The Lions have slid to a 2-5 record after thumpings from Geelong, Essendon and Collingwood, and Voss said all players needed to lift.
Sparked by comments from club chairman Angus Johnson earlier this week that some players needed to take a good, hard look at themselves, a better preparation has been at the head of the to-do list.
"If you've lost three in a row, you've got to do things better," Voss said.
"As far as I'm concerned we're still short of where we need to be.
"Clearly we're all working towards that. The players are very passionate about it, and we're all in it to try and turn it around and it's got to start this week."
Veteran defender Ash McGrath said the debriefing after Saturday's 58-point loss against Collingwood has been brutal.
Voss questioned his group about what they had learnt from Magpies Dane Swan and Steele Sidebottom, who torched the home team for a combined 69 disposals.
"The question was asked if we were coming into meetings and actually writing down what they do good and what we don’t," McGrath said.
"If we want to be an elite team we have to start preparing right, even if that means every single one of us watching behind-the-goals footage of the teams to see what they do right and where we can get better."
Voss said he had been impressed by the fledgling Giants, who notched their historic first AFL win against Gold Coast last week.
He said there was no risk of taking them lightly, given that the Lions humiliatingly lost in similar circumstances to the Suns in round seven last year.
"If we want a reminder [of what happens] when you potentially take a team for granted, then we only need a very short memory," Voss said.
"If we're 5 per cent off, we know what a team can do. Our recent memory says we shouldn't be resting on our laurels, that's for sure.
"If we're coming into the game anticipating this will be easy, that's the wrong attitude."
Captain Jonathan Brown admitted the three recent heavy losses could impact on the Lions' motivation and intensity, but said starting with this week they would turn things around.
"We need to get back into that groove of consistency in the way we approach our preparation," Brown said.
"We've got two choices, we can have a mope around and throw the toys out of the cot or we can stand up and do something about it. It's not going to turn around in a week, but it starts this week and we can start chipping away at it again."
