It’s easy to forget sometimes that Dayne Zorko’s AFL career is still only three games old.

Recruited at the relatively mature age of 22 during last year’s Trade Period, Zorko had already made quite a name for himself among Queensland-based football followers after dominating the local Leagues for a number of seasons.

Now, since overcoming an off-season hip complaint, it seems as though he has found his feet in the AFL.

But the bubbly former Broadbeach Captain says he has noticed a significant change in the game at the elite level.

“It’s fast, there’s no doubt about it,” Zorko said.

“Although each week I feel as though I’m picking up more of the game and understanding more when to go, and when not to go.”

Since playing a cameo role as the substitute in his debut match against Collingwood back in Round 7, Zorko has been an important part of the team as a small forward and occasional midfield pinch-hitter.

Over the past two matches, he has averaged 16 disposals, 5.5 marks and one goal per game. But it’s probably his 7.5 tackles per game and additional pressure acts that would most please the Lions’ coaching staff.

“One of the key factors for the team is to apply forward pressure when the ball goes in there and try and lock it in for as long as we can,” Zorko said.

“I think Josh Green and I have provided that since being in the side.”
